10,000 Children go to School at the Royal Show
The Royal Show’s Education Village is back and promises to be bigger than ever in 2009. The Show is ready to welcome over 10,000 school children to come and find out what lies beyond the farm gate. As one of the most prestigious agricultural events of the year the Show provides a unique opportunity to find out more about the work of those living in the countryside, how food is produced and leisure activities for the outdoors.
Show organiser, the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE), and Farming & Countryside Education (FACE) believe that keeping children up-to-date and interested in farming and agricultural enriches their learning. Primary and Secondary schools are therefore, being offered FREE educational visits to the Royal Show 2009.
From a series of hands-on activities to a dedicated education trail there really is something for children of all ages. Activities confirmed to date include baking, grain art, paper-making, storytelling, bug-hunting, planting and practical science, all aimed at linking farming to everyday activities. The Show’s education trail will provide an opportunity to follow themes such as healthy living and will also direct young explorers to exhibitors who would be delighted to welcome them onto their stands. These exhibitors will cover all aspects of the food chain, from meeting livestock to sampling cheese.
Commenting on the 2009 Show, Honorary Show Director, Mark Spencer said: “As England’s premier agricultural event, the Royal Show will be showcasing the very best of English farming, food and the countryside. The Show provides an excellent opportunity for children, and teachers alike, to connect with farming and the countryside, to ask questions, and find out more about food, farming and the environment in the context of everyday life. The Show has the potential to be July’s biggest outdoor classroom in England!”.
