Society consults the industry on new event concept

The Royal Agricultural Society of England is consulting breed societies and others involved in the livestock industry to assess support for a Livestock event to succeed the Royal Show. The concept is for a livestock event at Stoneleigh which is run by the industry, for the industry, facilitated by the RASE.

In a letter sent out last Friday, RASE Chief Executive, Brian Warren explained the Society’s proposal and assured recipients that RASE remained committed to developing a collaborative prestigious livestock breeders’ event with the breed communities from 2010.

“We have invited feedback and comment from the livestock community to help us resolve the undoubted issues and the divisions of responsibility that would be necessary to make a new event viable.

“Since the decision to cancel the Royal Show, the Society has been gathering views from the industry. What is absolutely clear, is that most sectors see the future lying in collaborative effort based at Stoneleigh Park over one or two days in early July. Furthermore individual breed societies wish to have more influence and control over their own classes, judges and stewards. We believe that, working together, we can produce a livestock event that is relevant, contains a platform for keen and genuine competition and provides the perfect showcase for the excellent genetics which underpin the British dairy, cattle sheep and pig sectors,” said Brian Warren.,

Notes to editors

Following the announced closure of the Royal Show from 2009, the Royal Agricultural Society of England has committed to launch a number of new, more focused technical and commercial events. While the Festival of the Horse is the first event to be announced, others will follow at the Royal Show including a Breeding Livestock Event, a Careers in Agriculture Convention and a Smallholder.

Further development of the Stoneleigh Park site will also form part of the RASE’s future plans.
